CHRISTMAS TIME

A space for memories

FÉLIX REVELLO DE TORO
Original Drawing

It’s Christmas, that time of year that always invites us to smile, even though, sometimes, our hearts want to break into tears.

Christmas has a peculiar way of dwelling in the heart. It spreads like a soft light that caresses the wounds, like a whisper that resonates in the corners where we keep our dearest memories. It is a season made of contrasts, where the shine of the streetlights seems to confront the shadows we sometimes carry inside.

There are christmases when joy doesn’t arrive as expected. There are tables where an empty chair becomes the silent protagonist of a symphony of memories, offering sighs and glances full of meaning. There are gifts that will never be given, names that are no longer spoken, and embraces left in the past.

But even in sadness, there is something deeply human in this pain, because it speaks of the love we’ve felt, of the affection that still lives within us, even though we can no longer express it the way we would like.

These holidays have a strange power. They transform absence into a constant presence. We reconnect with the child we once were, with faces time has erased, with promises of years gone by. We feel that those who are no longer with us somehow accompany us, as if the lights on the tree were small windows to the past.

Yet, in this sadness, there is a depth we don’t always understand at first. To hurt is to remember that we were once happy, that there were laughs that filled the house, that someone loved us with an intensity that still vibrates in our soul. The emptiness hurts because it was once full, and that fullness, though absent, is never completely lost.

Christmas doesn’t always demand smiles. Sometimes, it invites us to close our eyes and listen to the murmur of memories. It takes us back to the nights when a beloved voice sang out-of-tune carols, to the mornings when the excitement of opening a gift wasn’t in the object, but in the love that wrapped it. The sadness of this season is not the enemy of joy, but its purest reflection.

Thus, even in melancholy, there is a way to celebrate. Because these days teach us that, even though the lights may fade and the carols stop playing, we are still here, loving and remembering. And that is the true miracle of Christmas, where love, even in moments of sadness, always finds a way to shine.

Merry Christmas!
